WHERE YOU SIT
PSALMS - DAY1
Years ago, I made a decision as an educator that helped me survive a very difficult season of my career. Instead of sitting in the break room during in between classes, I decided to sit in the back of my classroom while another teacher used my room. My disposition was a lot less negative as a result.
The break room, I learned, was where dissatisfied people went to vent their frustration. It was a breeding ground for bitterness and discontent. By removing myself from that toxic environment, I was able to view my day with a much different perspective.
The Psalmist points out that who we “walk in step with” will determine our success. Those who choose to disengage from the willful and the wicked will be “blessed.” Instead of ending up in despair, they will experience God’s joy and live with gratitude. Instead of grumbling about what they don’t have, their minds will continually ponder what God says and value the wisdom they glean. Instead of living for the flesh, they will know true contentment and satisfaction.
The Tyndale Bible Commentary explained the principle well: “What shapes our thinking shapes our life.” Who are you standing with in agreement? Sitting with in comfortable acceptance? Walking with and being influenced by? Who we spend time with impacts how we think and behave.
Where you sit matters. Don’t let yourself grow comfortable where you should not linger.
For the next two weeks, we will be in Psalms.
Starting March 4th, we will begin our next study - Shine: Living Like a Bright Light in a Dark World.
