TAKE THE CHALLENGE
Get Ready: Draw on God's Strength & Prepare to Move Forward w/ Courage - Day 16
I was watching an episode of Diners, Drive Ins and Dives when I witnessed an example of how one person’s example can influence the generation to follow. The host of the show was interviewing a young man who had inherited the restaurant from his dad. However, he hadn’t just easily stepped into the role of owner and chef. His father had challenged him to earn his keep by working his way up through the ranks. The young apprentice had begun by washing dishes and then served as a waiter. After many years, he was eventually allowed to oversee the register and handle cash. Not until the novice had proven his worth did his dad invite him into the kitchen and hand him the keys.
Caleb has a very valuable possession — his daughter. And he ensures that her future is secure by seeking a man of valor to “take the challenge” and prove his worth. A courageous leader basically invites his successor to take action, and Othniel shows he is “ready” to assume the responsibility.
The name “Othniel” means “lion of God” or “strength of God.” Literally, his name describes a hunter who pursues. This strong and courageous commander in training picked up his “shield of faith” and moved forward to capture the prize and expand his inheritance. Instead of shrinking back in fear, he pressed on in the strength of the Spirit.
This short account from Israel’s history challenges us to consider both our present life and our future legacy. First, we can ask ourselves if God is nudging us to “claim” more territory for him and enlarge our own spiritual inheritance. If we fail to press on, we will miss out on the greater blessing God has prepared for us. Second, our courageous choices to act in faith on a daily basis serve as a model for the next generation. As women of valor, we can encourage those coming behind us to “take the challenge” and respond with bold faith.
FUEL FOR THOUGHT:
“In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” (Ephesians 6:16, NIV)
