I felt attacked and misunderstood. Someone had taken my words and twisted them to suit their own interpretation, and now I was rendered speechless in my defense. Out of sheer frustration, I retreated into solitude and cried the ugly cry. After a few minutes, I turned to the only place I knew I’d find help — I prayed and asked God to protect me.
David shares his anguish and lament in this Psalm during a season of great distress. Arrogant enemies who hold no regard for God have attacked him, and He appeals to the Almighty for mercy. He boldly asks His Vindicator to “show up strong” on his behalf.
The prayer at the center of his request shows how this humble servant remains steadfast in his commitment to honor God. “Teach me Your way, God.” Instead of grumbling about his circumstances and getting bitter, David resolves to remain open to instruction. He acknowledges he lacks understanding and desperately needs God to guide him in order to survive this adversity.
David does more than merely ask God to intervene and change his circumstances — He asks God to transform his heart. He surrenders his desires, hopes, and dreams on the altar and offers his whole self to God with undivided devotion. Instead of living consumed by fear of man, this man of faith chooses to reverently rely on God’s character.
Friend, no matter how loud the enemy roars, your God remains faithful. You can rely on Him to teach you how to respond. Your God will always stand with you, safeguard you, and show you His goodness.
