The rebuilding project described in Ezra and Nehemiah was successful because the people“worked with all their heart.” (Nehemiah 4:6, NIV) You and I can follow their example and resolve to wholeheartedly partner with God to bring about restoration in our day. Let’s get started. . .
OVERVIEW OF EZRA AND NEHEMIAH
These two books reveal how God will use His obedient servants to bring redemption to the ruined places where the enemy has brought devastation. All the opposition in the world cannot thwart God’s restoration project if we willingly partner with Him to rebuild.
AUTHOR, DATE, AND BACKGROUND:
In the original scrolls, the book of Ezra and Nehemiah were combined into one transcript. The exact authors are never identified, but through reading one can surmise that the first person narrative sections were authored by Nehemiah or were possibly taken from his personal journal. Bible scholars agree that the scribe Ezra penned the bulk of the rest of Nehemiah plus the latter half of Ezra that retells his own story. The first six chapters of Ezra outline the exploits of Zerubbabel without clearly defining the author; however, Ezra likely penned those chapters as well.
