HEALING SWEETNESS
Reality Check: 30 Days in Proverbs to Help Recalibrate Your Unsteady Heart / Day 16
I stood in the grocery aisle and scanned the shelf looking for two words — raw and organic. I had a terrible cough, and I’d read an article online about the immune boosting benefits of unfiltered genuine honey that is sourced right from the honeycomb.
Honey brings healing, and sweet words are similarly a balm for our souls. Our speech can make what is bitter more dulcet and pleasant to digest. I wish I could bottle up healing talk and put a teaspoon of it in my morning cup of tea, but that isn’t the case. I confess that I’ve rashly used my words the wrong way, and I’ve also cried bitter tears over a harsh retort from an unkind person.
When our words please God, His Spirit breathes life into what we say. Our words can revive the weary. A tender affirmation of another can literally uplift their spirit and bring physical renewal. What we say can help others turn from anxious thoughts and erratic emotions and fill them with peace and confidence.
We aren’t talking about sugar-coating what we say in a fake way. It’s letting God’s grace impact how we communicate. God’s grace is the remedy we all need.
