GOOD SENSE
A CERTAIN CONFIDENCE: LIVING WITH UNQUESTIONING FAITH IN CHRIST IN AN EVER-CHANGING WORLD (24 DAYS IN LUKE) / DAY 15
Toward the end of his life, my maternal grandfather lost his vision entirely. His physical perception of reality was lost, but his mental understanding remained intact. In contrast, we also had another much younger family member who was able to see quite well while wearing a pair of glasses, but his mental perception of truth lacked much good sense. He thought he was a whole man, but he lacked discernment.
When Luke says that the prodigal son “came to his senses,” the original Greek wording describes an awakening transformation in the way we think. One who comes to his senses is literally “becoming one’s self.” The implication is that previously the unrepentant prodigal was acting against his very nature, but in humbly submitting to the truth, he became the whole man God created him to be as His beloved child.
Like this wayward son, we can chase after many things this world tells us will make us happy and whole, but will only leave us bankrupt. Sin makes us lose our senses. Choosing to serve ourselves blinds us to the truth that will set us free.
The closer we draw to our Heavenly Father, the stronger our good sense of what is true will develop. With repentant hearts, we can turn from the temptations of this world, come right to our Abba Father and express sorrow over our sin. Our compassionate God will always roll out the welcome mat and rejoice when we run to Him.
