A RIGHT SPIRIT
Battlefield Prayers: Pray Big for 30 Days and Fight for Breakthrough - Day 26
When my husband gets home from work, he doesn’t stop working. He’s a do-er by nature, and so he likes to stay busy. Before he exits any room I am in, he will normally say, “Can I get you anything?” Even if he has a long list of things to get done, he will drop his agenda to make sure I am taken care of and secure. His worker bee mentality and selfless nature is quite convicting. I tend to want to lounge on the couch and be as comfortable as possible. The laundry can wait till later, and the dishes stack up in the sink. His lack of laziness and diligence challenges me.
The Psalmist knows he is prone to indifference and responding with a lackadaisical attitude. This is why he prays for God to give him a new heart—to clean up the self-serving DNA in his soul and transform him into a servant with a steadfast spirit. The Hebrew word used here describes someone who is persevering, sincere, firm, and willing to do what is required. A right spirit responds with sacrificial obedience.
When we humbly rely on God, He hears our cry for help and takes our self-indulgent hearts and replaces them with a resolute spirit. It’s a miraculous work of His Spirit that enables us to resist the destructive influences of this world, the tendencies of our flesh, and temptation from the devil.
PRAY BIG: Lord, renew a resolute spirit within me. Amen.
